Based on the statistics we found online and from speaking to Peter, we came up with this story line:
Two children are presented in the beginning of the coloring book. They both attended the same public school, have similar interests, and are good friends. Often times, Child A goes to play dates at Child B’s house, but B has never been to A’s home. While Child B lives in a nice house with his mother, father, and younger sibling, Child A lives in a car with his mother. Child A and his mother lost their home a few years ago when the father left the family. The father was the primary source of income and the mother struggled to make ends meet. Despite not having enough money to own or rent a home, she dedicates herself to making sure that her son is fed, clothed, and enrolled in school. With the little money she makes at her job, this is all that she can afford. Although B is aware of A’a situation, this does not stop him from being friends with A. In fact, it strengthens their friendship as B tries to raise awareness about homelessness and do whatever he can to help his friend. Child B not only learns about poverty from Child A, but also becomes inspired by Child A’s work ethic and dedication in school because of the difficult situation A lives in.
However, after meeting with Mercedes and Tiffany, we learned so much more information that we could use to make our storyline much more interesting and true to real life.
Taking notes was very important to the meeting because Mercedes provided an immense of information, some that we would otherwise forget without notes. It is helpful to refer back to them when brainstorming various story lines.
