Today, we had our first meeting with our CAS supervisor, Peter Wilson, to introduce a proposal for our human rights-based CAS project. We, as a group, chose to focus on poverty because we felt that it was very relevant in today’s time period and as students in NYC where poverty is visible in all locations. While brainstorming about what we could do with our project to benefit the cause, we all agreed that we didn’t just want to raise money through bake sales and donate it to organizations. Instead, we proposed that we raise awareness about those in poverty to the youth. We chose to target the youth because we knew that there are many stereotypes surrounding those in poverty and we felt that the youth was the least exposed to this issue.
We came up with the idea of creating coloring pages so that we can engage the young reader and deliver a message at the same time. We wanted to depict images of real life examples of poverty and include a short caption at the bottom of the coloring page of either a statistic or a message to break stereotypes. In terms of distribution, we thought that our friend, Tatiana, could help us by connecting us to her uncle that is in the book publishing industry. With that in mind, we began to research about poverty and coloring pages to brainstorm.
